Soft and Hard Traumas and PTSD: David Berceli

Dr. David Berceli talks about the difference between soft and hard traumas, and PTSD.

When talking about traumas and PTSD, we tend to think they are caused by a harsh, overwhelming event such as sexual assault, combat, car accident, etc. But a trauma can be caused by “softer” events that don’t seem like much–a dental procedure, living with a non-abusive alcoholic parent, even being injured while playing. All of these ignite a trauma response that leaves a residue, or body-memory, that remains the rest of one’s life and impacts how we feel, relate to others, and function in life–whether we are aware of it or not.
