No PTSD? OtherTypes of Traumas

Besides PTSD, there are other types of Trauma.

trauma, PTSD, PTSD treatment, anxiety, sleeplessness, insomniaMost people don’t believe they have trauma and therefore don’t seek help for it no matter how much damage it exacts on them and their families. But trauma isn’t necessarily systemic like PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). We may be traumatized in such a way that it affects our relationships–friends, family, and business–but do well in all other areas of life, leading us to believe we are okay.

Most know what PTSD is. So if we don’t have its symptoms, we don’t think we suffer from trauma. But there are many other types of traumas. And if we have them, we suffer because of them.

  1. Stress: This isn’t really a trauma if it’s effects–anxiety, sleeplessness, anger, fear–go away within a month. But if they linger on any longer, then it is trauma.
  2. Hard Traumas: These traumas are the “big” ones that have a specific time and date you can point to, like car accidents, a fall, an attack, a tornado, earthquake, etc.
  3. Soft Traumas: These ocurred over a long period of time, such as abuse from a parent or spouse, living with an alcoholic, caregiving, work-related abuse, etc. They all took a toll on the body, but because they went on for so long, we adapted to them and think that the miserable way we feel is normal.
  4. Innocent Traumas: These had no intense emotions attached to them like being bitten by a dog, sports injuries, etc.
  5. Cultural Traumas: In America, 9/11 traumatized the entire nation and all its people. Where were you when the twin towers were attacked? Chances are you remember exactly where you were and what you were doing when you heard about it–a sign that you were affected by it. And how many times did you watch the images replayed over and over again? How could we not be traumatized by the horror?

We may not be devastated by something as severe as PTSD, but all of these traumas leave a lasting impression on the body that will continue to grow over time and manifest in illnesses and behaviors that affect us and the people in our lives.

The good news is that these traumas can be discharged from the body.

Trauma Linked to ADHD

Peter Levine, the founder of Somatic Experiencing®, talks about ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and Trauma in this 5-minute video.

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) has become a very popular subject in the media over the last decade with more and more problem-children being diagnosed with it and more and more medication being prescribed. Over 5.3 million children between the ages of 3 and 17 years of age–8.6% of children in that age range–have been diagnosed with ADHD according the the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Many theories as to the causes and treatment of ADHD exist. But Peter Levine explains in this video that the symptoms of ADHD, such  as hyperarousal and hypervigilance, may be rooted in some cases in unresolved traumas and the deregulation of the nervous system that results. The good news is that trauma therapy can be a very beneficial treatment for  ADHD.

Soft and Hard Traumas and PTSD: David Berceli

Dr. David Berceli talks about the difference between soft and hard traumas, and PTSD.

When talking about traumas and PTSD, we tend to think they are caused by a harsh, overwhelming event such as sexual assault, combat, car accident, etc. But a trauma can be caused by “softer” events that don’t seem like much–a dental procedure, living with a non-abusive alcoholic parent, even being injured while playing. All of these ignite a trauma response that leaves a residue, or body-memory, that remains the rest of one’s life and impacts how we feel, relate to others, and function in life–whether we are aware of it or not.

Trauma and PTSD: The #1 Cause of Human Suffering

I created this site to alert people to the dangers of Trauma and PTSD, the Number One Cause of Human Suffering on the Planet!

trauma, PTSD, what is trauma, depression, PTSD treatment, trauma therapy, trauma healing, Somatic Experiencing, Peter Levine

Larry Kessler

There are many types of trauma:

  • explosive combat traumas of war and PTSD
  • high-impact traumas of car accidents, falls, and attacks
  • seemingly milder traumas of medical, dental, and surgical procedures
  • tortuous trauma of sexual assault
  • forgotten traumas of childhood.

All of these impact our livelihood, decimate our sense of well-being, mutilate our relationships,  and destroy our families and children.

I promise to give you  the tools you need  here to find your own traumas and heal them. You will also be able to help those you love suffering with theirs.

One thing we know:

Trauma and PTSD do not get better with time.

If left untreated, they get worse.

PTSD and Suicide: Obama Reverses Policy

Trauma, PTSD, and Suicide have finally been acknowledged as a problem by the Commander in Chief.

trauma, PTSD, suicide, healing trauma, PTSD treatment, what is trauma, Somatic Experiencing, trauma therapy, somatic psychology,

On July 6, 2011, the White House reversed a longstanding policy in which condolence letters, written and signed by the President and sent to the families of those who died in combat or by accident, were not sent to the families of those who had killed themselves in a war zone. They will now receive them.

The recognition of the President could have a profound effect not only on the families of the victims but also on the increasing awareness of the prevalence of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and suicide in combat troops and veterans.

This reversal in policy clearly indicates a shift in the perception that PTSD–from which most of these soldiers suffered–comes from a personal weakness, or cowardice according to General Patton, to a recognition of it as a serious internal wound inflicted by combat.

Here is the official statement by President Obama on July 6 regarding the reversal of the policy: “This decision was made after a difficult and exhaustive review of the former policy, and I did not make it lightly. This issue is emotional, painful, and complicated, but these Americans served our nation bravely. They didn’t die because they were weak. And the fact that they didn’t get the help they needed must change.”

Finally, after years of record-keeping, PTSD and suicide is being seen as a real problem that kills more of our servicemen than wars do.

Wait a minute. Suicide kills more servicemen than combat? Is this an exaggeration? Continue reading

Trauma and PTSD: Healing Soul Pain

A Trauma and PTSD Treatment mixes ancient soul healing with the modern understanding of how the mind works.

This video from Dr. Jane Simington beautifully illustrates her way of working with the Soul Pain of trauma. She combines modern psychotherapy with Shamanism to create a way of working that inspires an elegant movement of the soul toward healing. The process is then reintegrated with the mind for a complete healing.

I support everything Dr. Jane does in this video. To the mental and soul piece, I would also add the body. The three need to be brought into harmony for full recovery. I do believe Dr. Jane touches on the body piece with movement and drumming. If you would like to know more about how shamanism can help in the treatment of Trauma and PTSD, contact me.

Knowing the Signs of Trauma and PTSD

How can you tell if you suffer from Trauma or PTSD?

trauma, PTSD, PTSD treatments, Somatic Experiencing, trauma healing, help for trauam, what is trauma, Levine, SEWe all have upsetting events, stresses, and worries that affect us for a short period of time. Some of the reactions we have to those upsets may match some of the signs of trauma. The difference is that those reactions—sleeplessness, fatigue, irritability, etc.—which can be signs of Trauma and PTSD, will go away after a few weeks. But when these symptoms go on for over a month, then this could be a sign that you are suffering from a trauma.
Then you need Trauma and PTSD treatment.

Whereas time can heal some stressful events, it does not heal trauma. In fact, the symptoms of trauma may not even surface until several weeks, months, or years after a traumatic event took place. This time lag between the traumatic event and the onset of symptoms may prevent us from recognizing the trauma event as the source of our sudden outbursts of anger, sleeplessness, anxiety, panic, etc. Continue reading

Sleep, PTSD, and Trauma

The Effects of Trauma and PTSD on Sleep—

and what to do about it–is the focus of the following article from the National Center for PTSD.

trauma, PTSD, sleeplessnes, somatic experiencing, trauma healing, trauma therapy, combat vets, veterans, insomniaSleeplessness is one symptom of trauma and PTSD. Although the article gives good suggestions to cope with it, seeking help to heal the condition, plus a multitude of other symptoms, is the most effective way to go. Sleep, Trauma, and PTSD

Many people have trouble sleeping sometimes. This is even more likely, though, if you have trauma or PTSD. Trouble sleeping and nightmares are two symptoms of trauma and PTSD.

Why do people with PTSD have sleep problems?

They may be “on alert.” Many people with PTSD may feel they need to be on guard or “on the lookout,” to protect him or herself from danger. It is difficult to have restful sleep when you feel the need to be always alert. You might have trouble falling asleep, or you might wake up easily in the night if you hear any noise.
